In January, 2012, United Way of San Juan County awarded more than $78,000 to 16 non-profit agencies in the county. The grants support 24 programs on Orcas, Lopez and San Juan islands. According to Candace Bodenhamer, Treasurer,
“We were able to fund 70% of all grant requests received from non-profit agencies countywide. This is an encouraging increase, as we were only able to fund 47% of the requests we received last year. We were able to fully fund Orcas PIP, Friday Harbor Elementary School PIP, Head Start PIP, and Orcas Island Senior Center’s Hearts and Hands Program this year. “

In addition to the funds granted through the allocation process, a total of over $9,500 in designated contributions was distributed to these and six additional programs: Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Salvation Army, Summit Assistance Dogs, Lopez Housing Options (LOHO), and Peace Island Hospital.
The mission of United Way of San Juan County is to enhance the ability of local agencies to meet vital needs of our community. “The needs of our community are accelerating,” said Bill Morrissey, Board President. “At a time of continuing economic downturn and dwindling public resources, our support to programs serving children, families and seniors in our community has never been more important.”
