United Way of San Juan County does not believe in pestering our donors. We do only two mailings each year. We publish our newsletter in May, which gives information about the programs we are supporting for the current year. In September, our campaign kicks off, and we mail a solicitation letter to all our donors. In this way, our supporters have two opportunities to invest in United Way’s programs within Juan County for the following year.

Some donors prefer not to receive the second mailing if they have already donated. We are sensitive to this, and upon request we will place your name on a “once yearly” mailing list. For donor information, this adds extra time and cost to produce the mailing. We appreciate your understanding, and if it is important to you not to receive the second mailing, please feel free to contact us.

How do we make your donations count most in our communities?

There are many questions that the Allocation Committee considers when deciding how to make your contributions help most effectively. Grant applications from local non-profit agencies are reviewed and judged based the following criteria:

Are the program’s goals consistent with United Way of San Juan County’s Community Safety Net funding priorities?

Building healthy and resilient children, youth and families

Ensuring everyone has food to eat, a roof overhead and a healthy living environment

Creating systems that increase physical and mental health and well-being

Promoting safety and preventing violence and abuse

If so, the Allocations Committee considers the following questions:

Will the funds stay in San Juan County to help island residents?

Are the desired outcomes important to our mission and priorities?

What difference will this program make in our community?

Does the application identify and mitigate risk factors?

How are outcomes measured?

What is the program’s track record?

Does the program’s, and parent agency’s (if applicable) budget balance and otherwise make sense?

Does the program foster collaboration?

Does the program duplicate services?

How many people (unduplicated) does the program serve?

Overall, how much “bank for the buck” does this program’s budget provide?

Has this program complied with United Way grant requirements this year (if re-applying)

Does it meet any of the following criteria?

Critical unmet emergency needs in the community

Loss of existing funding in essential prevention programs

Loss of funding in other important programs

Gaps that exist in emergency, prevention and island-specific needs

New programs that meet critical emergency needs

Additional staff/hours for service in existing programs

Let us know your ideas for project for this year!

Day of Caring is an annual event sponsored by United Way to further the spirit of volunteerism and to demonstrate what people working together for the community’s good can accomplish.

The day’s events include service projects designed to aid community members and programs that could benefit from a day’s work. In the past we have given seniors and disabled community members assistance on home projects, attended to non-profit community buildings, weeded and groomed the school garden on Lopez , along with numerous other accomplishments on local projects.

In 2012, Day of Caring will be Saturday, September 8th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Orcas, Lopez and San Juan islands.

Get involved and voluteer! Day of Caring will be much more productive and fun with your contribution!
