San Juan County Second Annual Day of Caring

More than thirty volunteers on San Juan Island participated in United Way’s second annual Day of Caring on October 12th. Another fifty volunteers completed community projects on Lopez and Orcas Island. On San Juan, volunteers cleared brush and cleaned gutters for seniors, raked and cleaned the children’s playground at the Fairgrounds, patched a gravel driveway for one family and pulled weeds at the Mullis Senior Center.

United Way Day of Caring events are designed help those who may not need ongoing assistance from human services programs but may need a few hours of support to make their lives easier. Larger projects benefit a wide range of island residents. Director Bonnie Gilmore hopes to see the event grow in coming years as a way for United Way to give back to a community that very generously supports its agencies and programs. Businesses that supported the 2007 Day of Caring include, Island Gardens, Browne Lumber, Islander’s Bank.
