Investing in the Community

The dollars that United Way provides to our thirty-two partner agencies is an investment in the human assets of our community. We invest exclusively in local programs after evaluating the overall picture of our community’s needs.

The need continues to grow. Funding Requests for 2006 exceeded $240,000, yet we were able to grant less than half that amount. Your contribution is critical so that we can continue to bridge the gap between program needs and our ability to provide. We ask you to give generously, knowing that whatever you are able to give helps local people who need it most.

Outreach Programs

MENTORING: Mentoring is a time-honored tradition! Volunteer mentors are changing lives throughout San Juan County. More than eighty matches between well trained adult mentors and youth are ongoing. Research has shown that children who meet regularly with a mentor are more likely to stay out of trouble, succeed in school and achieve their goals.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT: Rental Assistance Programs help households avoid homelessness. These programs ensure families have a roof over their heads by providing one-time assistance to those facing eviction or foreclosure, or those who have been displaced and are in need of new housing. In an effort to build healthy and resilient children and families, Rental Assistance Programs give priority to families with children.

PRIMARY INTERVENTION PROGRAMS: Specially trained adult volunteers provide children with in-school social and emotional support through child-directed play. United Way funds PIP programs on all islands with more than 150 children participating. Research shows that disruptive behaviors by one or two children in a classroom can reduce an entire classroom’s ability to learn and a teacher’s ability to teach.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMS: With services on three islands, these programs provide assessment and services to all ages. Treatment includes individual, family and group therapy, case management, medication management and emergency services for mental health and substance abuse crises.
